First we ask where the sun goes. Only then, where the kitchen will be. Orientation is not a line in a table — it is a brief that sets the layout of the whole house.
South is for living, east for the morning, west for the evening — and summer makes it difficult. And north? North is not a mistake. Northern light is steady and soft, which is why painters' studios face it. A study, a workshop or a gallery corridor take north better than a bedroom takes west.
A window is not a hole in a wall
The size of the window is the last decision. Before it come the depth of the room, the height of the lintel, and what the window frames. A square metre of south-facing glass heats a room more than a metre of radiator — and in July it overheats it just as reliably. That is why we draw the shading before the sills.
